EL BARRIO | THE NEIGHBORHOOD
JOB INTERVIEW
Feature film | Bogotá - Colombia | Dir: Carlos Osuna
TEASER
THE STORY
Who hasn’t had a job interview? One after another. Blessed are those who have never had to attend one. Gabriel is not the case. He is only 19 and he is already a loser, he hardly finished high school and does not want to study anymore. Not that he can do it. His family is busting his balls about him not helping with expenses, but he thinks that he was born for something better, that wasting his time in a routine job is not worth it because that way his natural talent might never be discovered. Gabriel has been sending resumes out to jobs he’s not qualified for, and deliberately lying about his skills in an attempt to get more money. Suddenly, he receives an unexpected call from a U.S. multinational. They want him to attend a job interview. There is a stir around him. The interview is in English and he must dress like a gentleman: wearing a jacket and a tie! His family is happy and proud but his rebel rapper friends feel slightly betrayed. Gabriel must immediately learn English, change his style, and cut his hair, all in an attempt to get the job.
CONTENTS
The film raises the tragic question of what the character should do to find his place in the world. The most pathetic aspect of Gabriel’s story is that he is willing to give up his life as he knows it to become part of the system, but even so, the system does not want him.
Gabriel is the main character around which the whole story revolves, but he is ultimately insignificant.
The film will move constantly between drama and comedy (owing to interactions with his friends). In this same light, it will move between fiction and documentary.
WORKING GROUP
From the beginning, Job interview was conceived as a collaborative production. The project was created and will be produced by Malta Cine, the company that produced the first two feature-length films of director Carlos Osuna (Fat, bald, short man and With the lips closed) who will also direct Job interview. Osuna’s films have participated in important international festivals, including San Sebastián, Chicago, BAFICI, Biarritz, Warsaw, Amiens, Shangai, Stockholm , Havana and Cartagena. They have been exhibited in such priviledged venues as the Museum of Modern Art (Moma) in New York City. His next film, The Contestant, was recently selected to be part of the Atelier of the Cannes Film Festival. The leading and executive producer of the film will be Juan Mauricio Ruiz, partner and producer of the projects of Malta Cine so far.
The team is made up of 2-35 Digital, a post-production laboratory that will be responsible for the finalization and colorization of the film. They have been involved in such as Los Hongos, Todo comenzó por el Fin and La Tierra y la Sombra (winner of the Golden Camera award at the Cannes Film Festival).
Also joining the team will be La-Tina Sonido Creativo, a recognized post-production sound studio that has been linked to films such as Violencia, El Cartel de los Sapos and El abrazo de la Serpiente.
Press and communication will be done by Laboratorios Black Velvet, specialized in the analysis and development of audiovisual products and projects. They are the creators and managers of the Bogoshorts film festival, and managers of press campaigns for movies such as El Vuelco del Cangrejo, La Tierra y la Sombra, La Sirga and La Sociedad del Semáforo.
Job interview will count with an excellent group of professionals during filming, including: Juan David Bernal (art director); Guillermo Santos and Nicolás Garcia Ruiz (directors of photography); Alejandro Quintero and Diego Castillo (direct sound); as well as technical staff of the highest quality. In addition to the above, the collectives La Lokera Producciones and KAC Crew, promoters and creators of hip-hop culture in Bogota, are actively supporting the project. We are very close. Give us something!
¿WHY DO WE NEED YOUR MONEY?
We have currently secured nearly 90 percent of the budget for the film. We have all necessary equipment for filming, post-production services of the highest technical and artistic quality, and the work input of all technical and artistic personnel. What we seek with this campaign is to cover important costs of filming such as food and transportation.
